HISTORY

As the second son of House Hioken of Korin, Valdemar was always viewed as an “important” child, albeit not quite so much as his elder brother, Valerian. As such, there were always certain expectations surrounding him which he felt he must meet. One such expectation was to be learned and to this he took like a fish to water. Guided by tutors whom he respected and adored, Valdemar found what he always believed to be his true calling: scholarship. He especially enjoyed literature and analysis, but could happily spend hours reading books on any subjects, be it history, philosophy, or (even better) the history of philosophy. This love of academia grew into ambitions, mainly centered on entering Rayla Academy. This dream will become reality in the next spring session of the Academy, when Valdemar will finally become a student there. His eventually plan in life is to teach, hopefully one day at the Academy, making his studies his career. He also has been betrothed to Lady Dar of Lahn, whom he intends to marry after graduation, when he has time to concentrate on starting a family and when she will be a few years older.

On the outside, Valdemar appears the perfect scholar: a member of the academic elite. However hidden away beneath this appearance is a side that few know he has: a side that loves the bawdy, trashy, low-brow literature and activities. The pressures of analysing and finding great meaning and depth frankly exhaust him at times and so every now and then he likes to curl up with a good romance novel and just enjoy entertainment for entertainment’s sake, no strings attached. While tales wit can be great fun in their own right, sometimes Valdemar craves nothing more than a vulgar joke. He knows these things are often quite low quality and he revels in that. He is, however, very secretive about this. They are his guilty pleasures in every sense of the word. Part of him wonders if there isn’t something wrong in him liking such “cheap” entertainment, while another part questions why he would think that there was something wrong with it. He would like nothing better than to just be able to relax and enjoy both the “high” and “low” art but the world he lives in has set them up as polar opposites, placing them in opposition.

His family and some of the servants are the only ones who know anything of this and even then none are privy to the full extent. Mostly they believe he just reads a smutty novel every now and then, a fact that they never shrink from teasing him about. This in turn only strengthens the desire to keep it hidden, to keep himself safe from ridicule and scorn. As Valdemar prepares to enter the Academy, this desire only gets stronger, as he has decided that he shall try to devote himself entirely to the academic world and put aside all the rest forever.

PERSONALITY

Valdemar is quite studious and hard-working, though he certainly isn’t opposed to having a good time every now and then, as long as it does not negatively affect his studies. He is also very patient, a trait that will likely serve him well in his goal of becoming a teacher. He has always been fairly ambitious and once he has set a goal he works towards it very single-mindedly, but never to the extent where he forgets to stop and smell the metaphorical roses.

Outwardly, Valdemar usually appears quite calm and collected, however beneath it all he is often quite stressed. He feels a lot of pressure around him, though he does recognize that a lot of this pressure he has put on himself. His reading of romance novels and the like have always been a way for him to deal with this, rather than blowing up or breaking down.

Valdemar is usually a fairly social person, but he isn’t the type that makes close friends easily. His world is filled with acquaintances, family, and servants.

APPEARANCE

Valdemar is fairly large man, quite tall and with a broad build. He has a decent amount of muscle from his sword-training; however since he doesn’t really focus on physical activity it is nothing too impressive. He has long, blue-black hair which he usually wears loose. His eyes are a deep brown. He usually wears well-made but plain clothes which he can comfortable sit in for hours. Valdemar is quite good-looking, making him popular with women. He has often dreamed that he is one of the heroes in a romance novel (albeit without the rippling biceps) and so while he enjoys this attention he does not take advantage of it.
